The Raval neighborhood in Barcelona is a melting pot of cultures, and has one of the most diverse immigrant communities. The area is brimming with hipsters, young artists and students making it the heart of the alternative scene in the city. However, it wasn’t too long ago that Raval was considered the “seedy” part of the city with a long history of cabarets and side show attractions.
Mimic is a 3-Star Hotel in an old converted theater in the heart of the neighborhood with a deep connection to the neighborhood’s show business culture.
After listening to the general manager’s story and budgetary guidelines, we were ecstatic to discover a unique set of photographs within our existing collection that spoke to the heart of Raval. This small series, taken 15 years back at a long standing circus/cabaret show, was the perfect opportunity to transform the hotel’s restaurant area, reinforce their connection to the neighborhood’s history and, since the images will be made available to purchase online, raise funds through the “Ravaling” campaign for #RavalKm0, a non-profit project by Fundació Tot Raval, which contributes to the beautification of the neighborhood through art and lighting interventions in public spaces, while creating educational and employment opportunities.
